The vaguely off-center feeling that something terrible is about to happen

The vaguely off-center feeling that something terrible is about to happen. Some news that is mostly bad for other people drops, and then something else that seems to be a little closer to home, and then…nothing. You start checking on everyone, and everyone is okay, and so you just wait. In the news, the President continues to commit one blunder after another, and nobody seems capable of doing anything about it. The world seems to be in an especially strong state of unrest. Sure, there is always conflict in the world, but the patterns of tension, conflict and drama between countries appears to be escalating toward chaos rather than order.

What’s wrong with order, anyway? I’m not talking about the order of monotony, or the order of a Pax Romana, where everything is in order because everyone is dead. What I mean are neat, easy-to-follow narratives of what is happening around the world, one conflict or tragedy at a time. My brain is hopelessly linear, and wants to meet and defeat each challenge in its own time and space.
